SASP NATIONALS UPDATE 06/21

(Please read this in its entirety)

1. Payment for Nationals. Reminder per the SASP Handbook Nationals payment is due by

June 24th. Unpaid squads will be deleted.

2. Safety officers-

a. We are still in need of safety officers. Signup link https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0b45abab2ba0fb6-2023#/

b. There was a glitch in the Signup Genius and the AM shifts were deleted. If you were signed up for an AM shift, please sign up again. Sorry for the inconvenience.

3. Registration is being moved to the new pistol building at the action bays. (Yes, it is finally done!)

4. New opportunity for a pre-registration for next year’s nationals. Any team that supplies 25 safety officer shifts at this year’s nationals will qualify to pre-register for next year’s nationals. We will be trying something SCTP does. You will submit your first and second choices of days and submit your squads for nationals along with your payment a couple weeks before registration opens. You may substitute athletes, but there will be no refunds. You are committing to that number of athletes. That will prevent teams from requesting a large number of slots and then not using them, which is what is causing issues right now with registration slot hoarding. It will eliminate your team having to fight for slots when registration opens and hopefully will help with our lack of safety officers as this event continues to grow. We will work to prevent safety officers from running their own team through a stage. Addition information will be provided following Nationals. 5. Ammo orders and practice bays, please contact Kris at kris@mysasp.com

6. If you have more than 16 firearms entries during any morning or afternoon session, you will need a coach for each of the groups of 16 entries. Please plan according for any sharing of firearms. Most days we are completely full and will need coaches’ assistance in having your athletes and painters ready so we can be as efficient as possible. Also, if you fill out your backup sheets in advance it will speed up the sessions.

7. MidwayUSA Foundation will be running a side match the 9th–12th. You make a $20.00 donation to the MUSAF account of your choice. If you can’t remember yours, SASP’s is OP20338 😊. You will get to shoot Go Fast and Pop Quiz. A random drawing from all that participate will be held for many great prizes including a firearm. Bring your own centerfire or rimfire firearm. They will have rimfire ammunition available until it is gone.

Our staff is headed to setup for nationals on July 3rd and will not be in the office after that until after nationals. We look forward to seeing everyone in Ohio. Hope everyone has a safe trip.

Rick

SASP Nationals Updates

Coaches:

SASP Updates to share.

NATIONALS

We will start with Nationals; the match was built to allow 3072 athletes to register. We currently have 1997 entries registered and no open slots. From the number of slots that only have one athlete in them, it appears there is some serious slot hoarding going on. We ask that all coaches go in and complete your squads and release the ones you are not using. We have at least a dozen teams that can’t register because there are no open slots. We have a couple teams that are contemplating canceling flights and not coming to Nationals because they cannot register their athletes. After the holiday, we will be contacting teams to verify you truly have only one athlete in those slots. We will be forced to start deleting hoarded slots so that the remaining teams can register and make their travel plans. Without calling anyone out there is a team that has more slots than you have athletes on your team to fill, we can’t have this. Your immediate attention to this issue would be greatly appreciated.

There seems to be a lot of confusion this year about blocked slots. We can only have 16 athletes on each bay to get done on time if teams properly manage their athletes and have painters and the next shooter ready to go. We opened 4 slots of 4 athletes to reach those numbers. The blocked slots are for our staff to open later when we know how many partial slots we have registered. We then unblock slots to get us back to our maximum number of athletes. For all those emailing us to open those slots, that cannot be done until later when we know for sure there are truly partial squads.

NATIONALS AMMO

We are again placing an order for CCI Mini Mags to be delivered to the Cardinal Center. Teams can pre- order up to 200 rounds for each rimfire entry your team has registered and paid for in SHOT for Nationals. Mini Mags will again be $10.00 per box of 100 rounds. Email kris@mysasp.com to reserve your ammo. We have a limited amount of ammo and it will be reserved on a first come first served basis.

We will also have some Winchester white box 115 gr 9mm available for teams reserving it at $31.00 a box of 100, or $310 a case of 1000. We have about 100,000 rounds so there is no limit, but we will only bring what teams have reserved due to all the weight transporting it to Ohio from Wisconsin. That can also be reserved by emailing kris@mysasp.com

NATIONALS REGISTRATION CHECK IN

The plan is to do registration in the new pistol building at the bays if they have occupancy. We will also be putting out a signup for Stop the Bleed classes in that building. If you are an instructor and willing to help teach a class or two, please let me know. SASP purchased a training kit and is bringing it. rick@mysasp.com

NATIONALS SAFETY OFFICERS

We still need a lot of volunteer safety officers to pull off another possible new world record event. Here is the signup link. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0b45abab2ba0fb6-2023#/ There will be a gun drawing again this year for at least 5 guns. Your name goes in the drawing for each ½ day you volunteer. Our caterer fell through, but if you work all day Chef Rick will again be preparing your lunch.

NATIONAL RAFFLE The tickets have finally arrived. Email kris@mysasp.com to get your tickets 6 guns on raffle provided by our great SASP Sponsors, tickets sell for $10 and your team keeps half. It is a great way to raise money for nationals, or to build your MidwayUSA Foundation account for the future of your team. Information attached below on the raffle.\ Winners will be drawn Friday night at the Rifle Awards ceremony.

TOP GUN CHALLENGE

Top Gun will again be held for athletes shooting SCTP Trap, Skeet & Sporting Clays and SASP Iron pistol, 1911 and your fastest rifle time. Register with Kris in the Pistol Registration Building (Central Entry Building on map below) before firing your first nationals shot.

PRACTICE BAYS There will be a couple available for $10 for 15 minutes. Contact Kris at kris@mysasp.com to reserve your times.

MidwayUSA Foundation Event

MUSAF will be doing an event for adults and athlete to shoot an SASP match with our national championship stages. See how you stack up against our nationals’ results. Watch for more information on this from MUSAF.

Action Shooting Athlete Goes for Gold at Junior World Championship

“Blaine really does owe all his success to the SSSF and SASP programs.”

Lori Simpson, SASP Parent

Blaine and his twin brother Aaron began shooting in the Scholastic Action Shooting Program as sixth graders, formimg the shooting team, Two2Shoot. Now with two Gold Medals under his belt from the 2023 Junior Olympic Pistol Championships, Blaine has been selected for the Junior World Championship and Junior World Cup teams for Sport Pistol.

“In the beginning they couldn’t have had any success without Scott and Lisa Poet-the Michigan State Directors,” said Blaine’s mother, Lori Simpson. “They held our hands and showed us the way, and really set Aaron and Blaine up for the success that followed.  Aaron and Blaine usually compete for the top spot at the SASP National Championships in Iron & Optic Rifle, and have continued to be the Ohio State Rifle Cup Champions year-after-year.  Aaron and Blaine shot 3-position air rifle for a while in the winter months, and then a year ago at the SASP National Championships Rick Leach-SASP Director, introduced Blaine to Vladimir Chichkov, and precision air pistol.  With the support of SASP, Rick Leach, James Hall and Jim Henderson, Blaine started competing in air pistol. James Hall, SASP Director of Development, made sure Blaine had a pistol to get started, and has been a constant resource to Blaine. Jim Henderson-Director Cardinal Shooting Center, introduced Blaine to an electronic target and let Blaine shoot an electronic target once a week at the Cardinal Center.  Blaine now has a primitive air range set up in the basement and he has everyone on speed dial when he needs coaching tips, encouragement and moral support.”

“When SASP started our international disciplines just under 2 years ago, we were met with some naysayers, said SASP National Director, Rick Leach. “We were told just because our athletes can shoot fast, doesn’t mean they will be able to shoot accurately and with precision. Our response was we have extremely talented athletes with a lot of drive and determination, and they can do anything they put their minds to. They love pressing triggers and competing and we need to open as many doors as we can to provide opportunities for our athletes to be successful.”

“I have had the great opportunity to mentor Blaine, said James Hall, Olympian and SASP Director of Development. “He’s a very attentive athlete and has focused on his goals and made significant improvements in the last year.  I tease that one of my goals for him and other rising SASP athletes is to replace me on the podium! Watching Blaine and Aaron transition from action shooting sports to International disciplines is a testament to the vision SSSF had for including air rifle and air pistol in their offerings. Within shooting sports, there is a discipline for everyone, from our SCTP shotgun program to rifle and pistol. It’s been exciting to watch Blaine grow as an athlete across our programs.”

“The competitive shooting community has truly become his shooting family,” said Lori Simpson. “SASP has encouraged Blaine and Aaron to pursue their goals and dream big!  Blaine has made so many lifelong friendships, and everyone is always rooting for one another.  The shooting community wants success for youth athletes both on and off the range.  We are so proud of his success.  Blaine hopes his most recent two Gold Medals at the 2023 Junior Olympic Pistol Championships, and being named to the Junior World Championship teams is just the beginning.  He can’t wait to represent the United States on an international stage.”

Scholastic Action Shooting Program Announces Director of Development, John Leach

The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) is excited to announce the hiring of Jonathan Leach as the new Director of Development for the Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP). John has a long history with the SSSF, first starting as an athlete in our Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and then shooting pistol when the Scholastic Pistol Program (SPP) began in 2012. John was an accomplished clay shooter, shooting Trap, Sporting Clays, and his favorite Skeet in SCTP through High School shooting his Browning Citori. John was a member of an SPP National Championship Centerfire Pistol squad shooting with Ozaukee Scholastic Shooting Sports in Wisconsin, using his GLOCK 34. John went on to give back to the program and coached with his high school team while shooting with them in college. John later got the opportunity to be hired by Concordia University of Wisconsin (CUW) to start and coach their SCTP and SASP teams. John coached the CUW team to two SASP Rifle National Championships.

John stated “I am excited to start my new position, and help pass on and instill the values I was taught being an athlete in both of the SSSF’s programs. I received a lot from my participation in the shooting sports and am happy I’m getting the chance to give back.” “We are happy to see another one of our former athletes join our staff. Many working for and on behalf of SSSF got to see John grow up in our programs. With his experience with our programs, we expect him to thrive in his position with SASP.” Stated Ed Fitzgerald SSSF Board Chair. Fitzgerald further stated “As a youth development program, it is our collective vision to one day see our entire board made up of successful alumni of our programs.”
