Ruger Donates 25th Anniversary .44 Carbine to Benefit the Scholastic Action Shooting Program

Ruger Firearms has generously donated a rare and collectible 25th Anniversary .44 Carbine rifle to benefit the Scholastic Action Shooting Program. The rifle is being auction on Gunbroker.com now through January 24, 12:30PM eastern time.

The serial number is 103-12756 and the rollmark date is September 29, 1982. In 1985 Ruger announced that, after 25 years of continuous production, it would stop manufacturing the famous Model 44 autoloading carbine. Ruger offered a Special Edition of 1,800, 25th Anniversary .44 Carbine rifles to celebrate the close of an era. The anniversary rifle was listed in the 1985 catalog and the suggested retail price was $495.00. The 25th Anniversary Model 44 Carbine shows the compact design and classic lines which contributed to the great success of this model.

These Limited Edition rifles are specially rollmarked “1961 – 1985 ~ 25th ANNIVERSARY” on the barrel, and they have a specially designed nickel silver medallion set into the walnut stock. Features of this rifle include an American walnut stock with a barrel band at the front of the forend. a folding-leaf rear sight with a reversible U/square notch plate adjustable for elevation and a gold bead front sight. The frame is drilled and tapped for scope mounts. It also features a curved, metal butt plate and tubular magazine that holds four cartridges.

The 25th Anniversary .44 Carbine will be shipped in a special Anniversary box along with an original manual, purchaser record card, and a “Firearms Safety Depends on You” booklet. Also included in this auction is a .44 Carbine 25th Anniversary medallion, along with a “blank” box end label and a 25th Anniversary decal. This rifle is being sold “as is.” The purchaser assumes all liability for its safe and proper ownership, storage, use, and resale. The rifle is a part of the Ruger factory collection in Southport, Connecticut, and a Certificate of Authenticity will be mailed to the winner of the. Note: the winner of this auction will be responsible for paying the Federal Excise Tax.

2017 SASP Ohio Halloween Regional

Marengo, OH – Although it was cold and the rain changed to snow for the 2017 Ohio Halloween Regional, the event held October 27-29 was a huge success.  Ninety four athletes battled the elements and competed with 29 athletes being young ladies.  With 94 athletes, participation was a 370% increase from the 2016 match.

This year also saw 5 college teams come to compete including brand new teams from Concordia University Wisconsin and Hillsdale College…both going home with medals – Concordia with 3 second place finishes and Hillsdale with 1 second place finish.  University of Wisconsin, Platteville took the college division winning 4 first place medals, with Michigan State University close behind with 3 first place medals.

In the high school divisions, past National Champions Lake Country Action Shooters and Ozaukee Scholastic Shooting Sports both of Wisconsin each also took home 4 first place medals. The local Ohio teams also had a very strong showing with Ohio Steel Stingers bringing 19 athletes and leaving with the most medals of any team accumulating 6 first and 2 second place finishes. The Buckeye Bullet Busters left with a first, 2 seconds and a third place finish for a strong in-state showing.

The match was attended by 17 teams representing 6 states Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee and Wisconsin.  Total number of entries went up 473%, making the Ohio Halloween Regional the largest regional of the year.

Scholastic Action Shooting Program Introduces New Stages of Fire

The Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) is introducing two new stages that can be substituted for Focus and Speed Trap at matches starting this 2018 competition season. “Over the past couple years, athletes and coaches have expressed an interest in adding new stages to continue to challenge youth athletes,” stated Rick Leach, SASP Interim National Director. “SASP staff listened to these requests and two new stages have been designed and tested.”

The first new stage the “M” was trialed at the National Championships at the Cardinal Center in Ohio in July on a side match.  Following Nationals, SASP staff members Dave Richman and Bill Perkins fine-tuned the stages and finalized the design.

“Our original plan was to only introduce one stage a year for each of the next four years, but with urging from coaches the substitute stage for Speed Trap is being released a year early,” Leach said. Speed trap is currently the longest stage at 75 feet to the furthest target.

Coaches requested a shorter version since some of their practice ranges are not deep enough to shoot that distance.  So, the “Exclamation.,” like the “M” was designed using the same targets and stop plate location as the stage they are a substitute for, but the furthest target is now only 48 feet instead of 75.

An added challenge to the new stages is that all past stages have had all the targets at the same height.  Both new stages challenge the athletes to learn a new skill set by transitioning between targets of different heights. SASP Founding Partner Action Target will soon have an SASP upgrade package available that will include the three new uprights and bases to be able to shoot the new stages, for teams who have previously purchased the Action Target SASP target set.

Missouri SASP Banquet a Success

On October 7th, 2017 the Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) held a national fundraising banquet in Arnold Missouri at VFW Post 2593. We had great food and a good time was had by all, while raising funds to support the SASP National program. A special thanks to Shelly Cendroski head coach of the Arnold Jr. Shooters, and all the athletes, coaches and parents who helped with the event. We had firearms and other great items that were won and auctioned, thanks to our generous SASP national sponsors, including our Founding Partners GLOCK, Action Target, Smith & Wesson, and the NRA. MidwayUSA Foundation Adds Over Half a Million To Youth Shooting Team Endowments

Columbia, MO– The year of 2017 continues to be a very positive one for youth shooting sports, specifically for those teams with a MidwayUSA Foundation Team Endowment. In September, alone, donations to the MidwayUSA Foundation generated $598,500 in matching dollars. The Matching Program matches contributions to youth shooting team endowments, 2:1, and is possible because of the generosity and passion of Larry and Brenda Potterfield. Their donations fund the program. Nearly 200 youth shooting teams benefited from this September matching contribution.

“There aren’t a lot of organizations that are able to offer a 2:1 match and we are thrilled to see more and more teams are taking advantage of that,” said Randy Moeller, MidwayUSA Foundation Executive Director. “With the giving season right around the corner we are expecting donations to continue to increase in the coming months and we are able to triple those contributions.”

Through the MidwayUSA Foundation website (midwayusafoundation.org/donate) donors can choose the team that will benefit from their contribution. Donations are tax deductible and 100% of the donation, as well as the match, benefits that team. The Foundation keeps zero for operating expenses. The 2:1 match will end in 2017.

The MidwayUSA Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity working to sustain the shooting sports industry by providing long-term funding to youth shooting teams. Every donation made is 100% tax deductible and supports the mission to help communities and organizations raise funds to support their youth shooting team. How the SASP has helped me as a young person: The Scholastic Action Shooting Program has helped me develop as a young person by finding solutions to problems and fixing them fast, if my firearm is broken I borrow someone else’s firearm or if it gets jammed I clear the jam and keep going no matter how long it takes me to clear it. It has helped my social skills as a person and to be more outgoing. Teamwork, if you are done reloading your magazines and you see someone on your team you go and help them load and if they need anything you help them. You let your teammates borrow your firearm, you cheer for them while they shoot and you tell them good job after they come off the line. You have determination and strive, your performance is counted on the clock it is you against time it is not a sport like showing horses where it is the judges opinion you go against yourself and the time. You have confidence in yourself and the will to strive to your greatest and do a sport where you can bond with everyone around you and have fun doing what you love, that is how Scholastic Action Shooting Program has helped develop me as a young person.

The All-Scholastic Team recognizes the top student athletes in the SSSF’s Scholastic Clay Target and Scholastic Action Shooting Program for their achievements in the classroom, on the range and in their communities. Through an application process, 2017 All-Scholastic Team Members have proven academic excellence by posting 3.0 or better grade point averages, shooting excellent scores in recent competition (95% in trap or skeet, 85% in sporting clays, 88% in international trap/skeet or 75 seconds or less for SASP) and by demonstrating outstanding community involvement.
