Apply Now for 2019 SASP Junior Olympic Development Camp

The Scholastic Action Shooting Program is excited to announce, that after a five-year hiatus, the SASP Junior Olympic Development Camp (JODC) is back. This is a great opportunity for SASP athletes and coaches to learn more about the Olympic disciplines of Air Pistol and Sport Pistol.  You will be learning from Olympic coaches and former US National Team members.

The 2019 Junior Olympic Development Camp (JODC) will take place in Colorado Springs, CO at the Olympic Training Center training grounds for USA’s Olympic shooting athletes!

The purpose of the JODC camp is:

  1. To assist USA Shooting in its pursuit of identifying SASP Athletes who have the potential to become USA Shooting Team members and, ultimately, Olympic champions
    and
  2. To provide SASP Coaches and State Advisors with increased knowledge and skills to become more effective in working with SASP Athletes.

The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation will host the JODC, which is specifically for SASP Athletes, Head and Assistant Coaches, and State Advisors registered with the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation. Coaches, State Advisors, and all registered, active SASP Athletes who are 14 years of age or older in the Intermediate Advanced through Varsity Division, are eligible to apply.

The U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Shooting have confirmed May 22-27, 2019 for the camp with coaches attending all days and athletes attending May 23-27. Interested coaches and athletes must apply and be selected for the camp.  (Please note these are the same dates as SCTP’s JODC at the OTC.)  The 2019 Junior Olympic Development Camp has room for up to twelve (12) qualified SASP Athletes. (That doesn’t mean all slots must be filled). For active registered Coaches and State Advisors, there are up to six (6) slots for coach training. We do not have final coach beds confirmed, so the application will show two different prices.  One is based on staying in the dorms, the other is for staying at a local hotel. We will confirm with you once we have the final number of beds available.

For complete details, please review the information sheet and application forms below or on the SASP Forms and Handbook section of our website. The deadline for receiving all completed application packages is Midnight, Thursday, April 19th, 2019 Central Time……NO EXCEPTIONS!

U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps (USNSCC) selects the Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) as their Marksmanship Program

The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps announced late last week the selection of the Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) as the firearms safety training and marksmanship partner for the USNSCC Program. The Scholastic Action Shooting Program along with the Scholastic Clay Target Program are operated by the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF), an educational-athletic non-profit amateur sports organization which exists to introduce scholastic age youth to competitive team shooting sports.

Founded in 1962, the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets is a national youth leadership development program. The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps runs two programs, one for ages 13 through the completion of high school and a second program, the Navy League Cadet Corps for ages 10-13. “The USNSCC values individual responsibility and sportsmanship, and we’re really excited to partner with an organization that holds these same values,” said retired Navy Captain Paul Zambernardi, the Executive Director of the USNSCC. “Our partnership with SASP is going to provide the opportunity to safely participate in team-based action shooting events, opening up a new world of teamwork and competition to the cadets of the Naval Sea Cadet Corps.”

Vicki Powell, Director of Unit Training with the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps added, “We are really looking forward to our partnership with SASP. This program fits perfectly with our stated program goals and will allow our units across the country to add a responsible competitive discipline to their ongoing unit activities.”

Rick Leach, National Director of the SASP program stated following the announcement, “We are excited to have this partnership with the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps. We are looking forward to completing the program development, training coaches and getting the Sea Cadet Youth Athletes competing at all our local, state, regional and national events in 2019.”

Sea Cadet unit leadership across the country will be attending SASP coaches training classes in the next few months with the goal to have units participating in competitions throughout 2019.

“SASP is an excellent program that promotes safe and responsible competition through team shooting sports”, stated Gary Weisbaum, Head of SASP Marketing. “This program provides a key recruitment and retention tool for U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps units across the country.”

About the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps:

2019 SASP All State Team Criteria

Thanks to the generous sponsorship by GLOCK, RUGER, CZ-USA and ACTION TARGET, at the 2019 National Championships SASP will have an ALL-STATE TEAM Competition.

Athletes who compete in their respective state SASP match in .22 pistol, .22 rifle (optic/iron combined), centerfire pistol or PCC are eligible to make their states SASP All-State Team at the 2019 National Championships in Marengo, OH.  Each state will have an All-State Pistol team made up of two rimfire pistol athletes and two Centerfire athletes (1911 will not be included).  The All-State Rifle team will be made up of two rimfire rifle athletes and two PCC athletes. (iron or optic will not be considered).

Any athlete who places in the top two at their respective state championships will be eligible to represent his or her state in that discipline. Athletes may qualify as All-State in more than one discipline.  If a top-two athlete is NOT attending the SASP National Championships in Ohio, then the opportunity will be bumped down to the next eligible competitor from that state who is attending the National Championships.

Athletes attending the National Championships (representing their state as an All-State Team member) will receive a custom shirt signifying their All-State Team designation!

Guidelines:

Top two athletes will be determined by the actual times shot for each discipline at their respective State SASP match.

Ties – If a tie occurs for final ranking, the In & Out (V for V if used) stage score will be used as the tie-breaker. If that does not break the tie, the fastest single run of that stage will be used as the tie-breaker. If necessary, the second and third run will be used as the tie breaker.

Times at the National Championships will be used from the athlete’s normal squadding with his or her team. Any ties will be broken as per the handbook and listed about using In and Out or V for V stage.

This is NOT an HOA event! Athletes do not need to compete in all disciplines.

SASP will provide awards to the 1st through 3rd place team members for each discipline. These awards will be presented at the respective awards ceremonies on Friday and Saturday at Nationals.

The All-State Teams will be comprised of two athletes from each state for each discipline, non-collegiate athletes only!

Good luck and congratulations to all the SASP All State Team members!

Help us identify and promote the fact that SASP is so much more than shooting!

We need your help!

We are frequently asked by individuals, small and large companies, non-profit organizations, local, state and national government representatives, and many others what the Scholastic Action Shooting Program is all about. The easy answer is that it is about competitive action shooting in a team environment that promotes collaboration, teamwork, and the development of shooting skills in pistol and rifle shooting. The lesser given, but equally important or more significant answer is that our program promotes friendship, respect for others, advanced listening skills, increased focus, analytical skills development and many, many more non-shooting related life skills. We know this experience is different for every youth competitor and their family.

We would like our Athletes, Coaches, Parents and Adult Volunteers to take a few minutes and really think about how you/your child’s or children’s participation in SASP has positively affected their lives outside of the shooting range. Have they:

Become a better student?

Become more responsible?

Made better life decisions?

Become a better friend/brother/sister/member of your family?

Started noticing the world around them?

Donated their time to charitable activities?

These are only a few examples of the changes we have heard from our coaches, parents, and competitors. We want to know what has changed in your child/children.

THIS IS WORTH TAKING THE TIME TO REALLY THINK AND SHARE YOUR STORY WITH US! THE TOP THREE SUBMISSIONS WILL WIN SOME SPECIAL PRIZES.

Here is what you must do:

Prepare a typed 300-400-word story addressed to SASP program management explaining in detail how you/your child/athlete has grown as an individual since joining SASP other than their shooting skills. Be sure to include what changed, why it changed, it’s impact to them and your family, and how that change will positively impact their life in the future. Also include at least five high resolution pictures of the athlete competing at an SASP event, practice or with other SASP athletes.

Download complete information for athletes here…

Download complete information for coaches, parents and adult volunteers here…

Submit these before 5:00 PM on January 31st, 2019 by email to rleach@sssfonline.com .

All submissions will be reviewed by the SASP Staff and a review committee. The top three stories with the most significant and clearly explained personal impacts will win one of the following prizes including guns from GLOCK, Taurus, and Mossberg plus Walker hearing protection!

First prize is guaranteed to be given away in each category, adult or athlete.  If 20 or more entries are received, the second-place prize will be awarded, and if 30 or more entries are received, all three prizes will be awarded.

So, start thinking first. Make notes of your key thoughts on this topic and then sit down and do your best to tell us how you feel the SASP program has and is changing you /your child’s/athlete’s life. I cannot wait to start reading and sharing these stories!

Respectfully,

Rick Leach
National Director, SASP
