Over 550 Athletes compete in Wednesday’s “Last Competitor Standing” competition at SCTP/SASP National Championships

One of the most popular attractions at the SCTP/SASP National Championships each year is the Last Competitor Standing competition. This year over 550 athletes competed on Wednesday night after the Opening Ceremonies. The trap fields at the Cardinal Shooting Center were lined up as far as the eye could see as shooters of all ages and sizes stood shoulder to shoulder to compete for some great prizes and the ultimate title of last “man” or “lady” standing. Prizes were awarded to the Top 8 Finishers in the Men’s and Ladies Division and the Top 2 Finishers in the College Division.

2018 National Championships July 14-21 @ Ohio Cardinal Center

The 2018 Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) National Championships is scheduled for July 14-21st, 2018 at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, OH. We hope you can join us!

Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) registration will open in the SHOT system on May 15th.

Scholastic Clay Target Program pre-registration will begin May 15th with general registration through the SHOT system open June 1st.

New for 2018!

Scholastic Clay Target Program High Over All Trap Event

SCTP will offer another High Over All (HOA) for teams that will include all of the “Trap” disciplines! Teams bringing athletes and competing in all 3 Trap disciplines of 16 yard Trap, Handicap Trap and Trap Doubles will have the opportunity for their team to earn a place among the top teams for a separate HOA!

This “Trap HOA” will be based on a team’s top 5 athletes in 16 yard trap, top 5 athletes in Handicap Trap and top 5 athletes in Trap Doubles. That total score will be used for the teams “Trap HOA”! It does not matter if the athletes are rookies or varsity as team scoring will be used!

These awards will be announced on the afternoon of Saturday, July 21^st along with the Trap awards and overall HOA awards at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio.

Teams don’t have to do anything different, they just need to have 5 or more athletes compete in each of these 3 disciplines to be eligible!

Congratulations to 2018 Scholarship Recipients

Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation is proud to announce the 2018 recipients in its Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) and Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) Scholarship Program. One hundred thirty three student athletes from 25 different states will receive scholarships totaling $83,300. From 2013 to date, SSSF has awarded nearly $400,000 in scholarship funds benefiting over 400 student athletes in the Scholastic Clay Target and Scholastic Action Shooting programs.

Athletes who are graduating from high school in 2018 and will enroll in college this year were eligible to apply for this year’s scholarships. Awards are based on SCTP/SASP participation, academics, need, essays and other factors. The scholarships are being funded by generous shooting industry sponsors, as well as supporters and donors who provide the SCTP with funds through national fundraising banquets.

2018 SSSF/NRA All-Scholastic Team Announced

The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation(SSSF) and National Rifle Association (NRA) Competitive Shooting Sports division are proud to announce members of the 2018 All-Scholastic Team!

Over 230 student athletes from 25 states have been named to the team this year and will be recognized at the opening ceremonies of the SSSF/SCTP/SASP Team Championship event on July 18 in Marengo, Ohio.

The All-Scholastic Team recognizes the top student athletes in the SSSF’s Scholastic Clay Target and Scholastic Action Shooting Program for their achievements in the classroom, on the range and in their communities. Through an application process, 2018 All-Scholastic Team Members have proven academic excellence by posting 3.0 or better grade point averages, shooting excellent scores in recent competition (95% in trap or skeet, 85% in sporting clays, 88% in international trap/skeet or 75 seconds or less for SASP) and by demonstrating outstanding community involvement.

Safety Officers Needed At SASP Nationals

The Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) is experiencing record growth again this year at the 2018 National Championships with nearly 450 athletes and almost 1,000 total entries to date! With this growth, we require additional help to run a smooth and efficient match. If you will be at the Cardinal Shooting Center July 14-21, have a half day to help and want to earn chances at some great prizes including a minimum of 5 guns, shooting gear and accessories please read on!

We are looking for half day commitments at the action shooting range to serve the roles of Safety Officers (SO) and scorekeepers. For each half day worked you will be eligible for a random drawing for the great prizes outlined above. If you have never worked on an action shooting range before, please view our YouTube video outlining the safety rules, standardized range commands and responsibilities.

If you would like to help as a score keeper please watch our video on entering scores using Practiscore.

Additional training will be provided on-site for those new to action shooting. Volunteers must be at least 18 to work as safety officers.

2018 SASP Midwest Regionals

The Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) held a Midwest Regional match May 18-20, 2018, at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex in Sparta, IL.

Despite the wet conditions leading up to the weekend, which made for a great setting for a lone bullfrog spotted on the bays, the match was completed with enthusiasm by the athletes. Intermittent rain and a lightning delay did not dampen the spirits of the teams.

Seven states including Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Kentucky, Iowa, Tennessee and Wisconsin, were represented. There were 76 athletes and a total of 162 entries competing in the five disciplines. Athletes in rookie, intermediate, senior and collegiate divisions participated in the match.

Top teams included Steel Shooters of Traer (IA) in intermediate rimfire pistol, non-collegiate open 1911, collegiate open 1911, intermediate optic rifle and intermediate iron rifle; Bluegrass Sportsmen’s League Steel Cats (KY) in non-collegiate open rimfire pistol; Hoosier Daddy Rifle & Pistol (IN) in collegiate open centerfire and non-collegiate open iron rifle; Arnold Junior Shooter (MO) in senior centerfire; Union Grove (WI) in non-collegiate open centerfire and senior 1911; Ozaukee Scholastic Shooting Sports (WI) in senior iron rifle and senior optics rifle; McKenzie Shooting Sports (TN) in rookie optic rifle and non-collegiate open iron rifle.

CZ-USA Renews Sponsorship with SCTP

CZ-USA announced recently that they will sponsor the SCTP again as a Platinum Level Sponsor for the 2018 shooting year! CZ-USA has developed the “SCTP Sterling” available now as well as competition type shotguns like the CZ-USA “All American Trap Combo” and the “612 Target ” for competitive shooters of all ages. People can see many of these fine firearms at our national championships being held July 14-21 at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio!

“The SCTP is a world class program and understands what it takes to run a youth shooting organization!” said Dave Miller, CZ-USA’s Special Project & Shotgun Product Manager. “We believe very strongly in the SCTP’s mission and direction and are proud to support such a fine organization with our products!”

A True Success Story: Jack’d up for Trap

Five years ago seems like so long ago for Jack Gerstmeier. At the age of 10 1/2, he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and celiac disease. Type 1 diabetes means that your pancreas no longer produces insulin that turn sugar and carbs into energy your body can use. It meant from now on he would require at least 4 shots a day to control his blood sugar for this chronic disease.

The diagnosis took a toll on him both mentally and physically. He quit playing volleyball and basketball because it was very hard to control his diabetes early on. He was at the age where hormones and growth spurts wreak havoc on normal middle school boys, but trying to control blood sugars while your body begins that process is a challenge all in itself. Sports were no longer an important part of his daily life.

Gradually things improved as he adjusted to his new normal. A year into his diagnosis he began receiving insulin through an insulin pump, which eliminated the 4 insulin shots each day. Things were slowly getting easier.

Knowing how important it is to be active and involved he was approached by his dad and asked if he had any interest in trap shooting. His grandparents had been league trap shooters at the Waukesha Gun Club while his dad was growing up. He was excited to give it a try. He was ready to find something he could be good at with or without diabetes.

Fast forward 3 years, Jack is now a varsity trap shooter for Poplar Creek Claybusters. He started at the intermediate level while in 8^th grade. He traveled throughout southeastern Wisconsin shooting in tournaments and improving his skills that season. On June 26, 2016, he went to Rome, Wisconsin to shoot in the SCTP State Trap Tournament. He participated in the 21yd intermediate handicap and took 3^rd place. This was a huge accomplishment for him in year one.

While continuing to shoot trap for a second season, he was asked to tryout for a pistol and rifle team. He joined Lake Country Action Shooters (LCAS) in late May, 2017. He immediately began practices and on June 11, joined LCAS at State in Sturgeon Bay, WI. This would be his first pistol and rifle competition and the weather provided him a great challenge. Many of the teams opted to wait out the storm. Jack’s coach insisted they persevere, if they could shoot in this they could shoot in anything. The team walked away with two 1^st place ribbons for center fire pistol and optic rifle. It was quite an accomplishment in the few weeks he was with the team.

Just a short 6 weeks after state, LCAS traveled to SASP Nationals in Marengo, Ohio. With a few additional weeks of practice for Jack, his JV squad walked away with three 1^st place ribbons in optic rifle, iron rifle, and center fire pistol and a 2^nd place in 1911. He returned to Marengo again in October this time as a member of the varsity squad and came home with four first place medals.

To improve upon his success from the year before with Poplar Creek, Jack’s JV Squad took 1^st place in the NWCTC Eastern Division Conference. Jack continued to improve, putting up some personal bests.

With all the successes with his shooting teams last season, in August, 2017 Jack received the “artificial pancreas”. This is still not a cure for type 1 diabetes, but definitely a game changer for him. His continual blood sugar roller coasters have almost disappeared. His new pump, regulates his blood sugar with the use of a continuous glucose monitor that gives his pump blood sugar readings every 5 minutes and decides to give or not give him insulin based on the numbers. He is finally starting to feel “normal” again, thanks to the latest and greatest in medical technology.

He is off to a great start again this year with both Poplar Creek Claybusters and Lake Country Action Shooters. For the first time in 2 years, he has had two 24/25 rounds this week. He is aiming for that 25/25 perfect round. He continues to work on reducing his time with pistol and rifle as he shoots at the varsity level this year. He looks forward to finishing this season strong in both disciplines, while looking ahead to the future. He continues to manage type 1 diabetes through technology and self discipline and is not going to let it stop him from achieving his goals.

Jack credits the SCTP and SASP organizations for providing alternative sports for today’s youth. The coaching he has received in both disciplines and his continued development has given him a new level of confidence. His coaching and training along with his new pump allow him to walk up to the line not as a diabetic but as a competitor just like everyone else.

2018 SASP Arizona State Match

The Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) state match in Arizona was held March 31, 2018 at the Pima Pistol Club in Tucson.

Team Baden-Powell was the 4th SASP team to form in Arizona so they had the honor of hosting the 4th State match. They were responsible for communicating with the Arizona teams, communicating with the home range, organizing registration, recruiting RO’s and managing the scoring for all the athletes that participated. This Venture Crew team is composed of Scouts from the Catalina Council Boy Scouts of America. This shooting team was formed three years ago and has great support from the Council and from the local community.

Arizona has currently has 5 SASP teams; Kingman, Casa Grande and three teams in Tucson.

Attendance at this state match was up 50% from 32 athletes in 2017 to 51 athletes participating in 2018. Entries across all disciplines was up 35% from 60 in 2017 to 81 in 2018.
